Photo: Building with Locally Grown Bales

Advantages of strawbale construction over conventional building systems include the renewable nature of straw, cost, easy availability, naturally fire-retardant and high insulation value.

Pictured is a semi load bearing structure. Strawbales can support roof loads and live loads if spanned by trusses with proper top plate construction and sufficient compression previous to final fastening of the top plate. Bales in a in fill scenario can be laid in any direction but I always lay them with twines on top and bottom edge to facilitate ease of "shaving" before plastering --you don't want to cut into twine. The walls in this home are nine feet. The plaster becomes integral to the sheer strength of the finished product so sheet-rock over non-plastered bales is not recommended and Tyveck is a big no no-- it will not allow plaster to penetrate and intertwine with straw creating that shear strength as well as diminish breathability which is a very important parameter for strawbale construction. Also, it is recommended to use natural stucco without any cementitious content. Water resistance can be achieved with linseed oil or agave.
